The Walk of Shame

April 4th, 2005 by Nancy

Ah, the walk of shame. I think most college kids probably do it at least a few times during their four years of imprisonment–er, education. (Probably more like every weekend, for some people.)

For those who don’t know, the walk of shame is the legendary trip you take back to your dorm room the morning after a hook-up. Often, bad things happen–before, during, and after that walk. Here are a few unenviable (yet typical) possibilities:

  • You might be forced to make small-talk with your hook-up-partner while you rummage for your clothes. This can be very awkward. After all, you’re both probably quite hungover. Also, you probably couldn’t remember each other’s name even if you wanted to.
  • You might be forced to chat it up with his/her roommates. This can be even more awkward, as you’re totally invading their space and privacy. It’s even worse if you’ve hooked up with one of them before.
  • You might get lost in a random part of campus you’ve never been to before, especially in your groggy condition. (Ah, that feeling of painful daggers of sunlight piercing your skull when you step out of the building at 6 a.m….)
  • You might see people you know, up early for a jog or a run, while you walk. They might smirk at you, knowingly. Even worse is if one of those people is a professor or teaching assistant you currently have.
  • You might realize, once you get to your room, that you forgot something back at the crime scene. Casualties like lost socks and panties are expected, but if it’s something important — like your ID card or your wallet — well, you’ll just have to go and get it back.
