Long distance love
April 26th, 2005 by BevinWhen I was in the seventh grade my boyfriend, Bob, broke up with me because he just couldn’t handle long distance relationships. He lived less than fifteen minutes away in the next suburb. I guess if he couldn’t see his girlfriend in home room or at lunch, it just wasn’t worth it.
Since then, I’ve had my fair share of long distance affairs. Just last year I flew to France to see a guy I had met only once and had gotten to know through email. Some call this crazy…they might be right. But, even though the relationship didn’t work out, at least I got to spend a week in France, including a few days alone in Paris. Fabulous.
My best friend is in the midst of a long distance love affair right now and she will agree with me that it is not the easiest thing in the world. Sure, it’s gotten more convenient with the advent of email. No longer do we have to wait weeks for letters to travel cross county. Although, personally, I miss the romance of a good love letter, something that email just can’t seem to capture. And yes, those weekend trysts are made all the more exciting because you haven’t seen your sweetie in weeks or months. But do you ever really get out of the Honeymoon phase? If you aren’t sharing the day to day happenings, can your relationship ever pass the fun of a vacation into the reality of every day? It definitely takes work and compromise, two key elements in any relationship. And at least you’re guaranteed a few weekend vacations. Maybe even in Paris.
