Wingwoman
April 26th, 2005 by ellaAlthough I am usually modest, I will have to say I am one of the best friends that I know. I was officially the “wingwoman” for a girlfriend of mine last week. No, I didn’t have to sidle up to the less attractive friend of a man my friend was interested in, but I did have to sit through a six hours of immature conversation so she could converse with the new love of her life. The thing was, I didn’t mind at all because I knew she would do the same for me. I am at that stage in life where I will do anything to help a friends get a shot at “true love” (if the cynic in me still believes in that term…or ever has for that matter). I did take one for the team that night, but it was for a good cause. This guy I had to chat up for an extended period of time droned on endlessly about his girlfriend at the beginning of the night, proceeded to guzzle more than his share of G&Ts, asked me if I thought he was attractive then tried to kiss me. The look of surprise on his face was priceless…he couldn’t believe I was not going to kiss him. I patiently (yet falsely) resorted to the explanation that he had a girlfriend and I was not about to participate in breaking up a relationship. His response was, “Oh, I told you about her?” What are we dealing with here? Get with the program, Rico. I tried to fulfill my wingwoman duties: chat up the less attractive/less mature friend, allow my friend some alone time, and not insult the oaf that I was assigned to. Check, check and check. Maybe I should get hired as a professional wingwoman.
