Advertising for Dates

April 29th, 2005 by Georganna Hancock

Following the divorce, I dated everything in pants that wasn’t moving too fast to catch! I mean, after a 25-year hiatus, I had a lot of catching up to do. Not only that, the sexual revolution came and went while I was changing diapers and making school lunches. No wonder I felt I’d missed out! I think I tested every format for finding a new life’s partner except the ones that cost $1500 and up. A popular, and supposedly successful, venue at the time were singles’ ads in a weekly give-away paper. I studied all of them before composing my own. It began with “Seeking next ex-husband … ” and must have deteriorated from there (I was just being honest!) because the paper refused to print it. Another attempt made it into the next issue, something along the lines of “seeking emotionally and legally available man interested in computers and investing”. I received one call, from an anonymous man who said, “I just wanted to know what kind of a woman would write an ad like that?” Not one that would date him, obviously. After finally connecting with an elderly crazy psychiatrist who dyed his hair dark red, I gave up on the ads and had better adventures in computer dating.
