Go easy on the scents

May 18th, 2005 by Nancy

I dated a guy once–and by this I don’t mean “I dated him for a period of time,” but that I went on a single date with him. The reason I didn’t go on a second date with him was because he was wearing too much cologne.

No, it wasn’t that he was wearing a woodsy and I like men who wear aquatics–it purely was the amount. He was just one of those ‘heavy cologne’ men who may or may not have even realized just how strongly he smelled.

Now, I like perfumes and colognes. I own a few designer scents myself, and in fact, when some perfumed person walks past, I can often actually identify the scent he/she is wearing. (Is that freaky? I hope not.) Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that I’m a pro-scent sort of person. So when someone is wearing too much cologne by my standards, it’s safe to assume he’s nearly suffocating everyone else in the room.

Wearing too much of a scent reeks–both figuratively (i.e., what is he trying to cover up?) and literally. It’s a lot like what they say about men with really nice cars: trying to overcompensate for shortcomings in other, ahem, areas.

Not only did the overbearing odor of Heavy Cologne Man turn me off, but it made me question the fellow’s character. (Does he have low self-esteem? Does he usually overdo things?) I felt bad declining the 2nd date, but in this case, it came down to a possible relationship (yes, he was just fine in many other ways) vs. a total shut-down of my respiratory system. And, being that I need to breathe, I chose lungs over love-life.
