Name a Reason to Stay Single

July 7th, 2005 by Holly Bentz

Last night, when I was catching up on some much needed rest, relaxation and reading, I ran across a new relationship phenomenon.

The latest trend in tying the knot entails creating a concoction of surnames. The tradition of women taking their spouse’s name in marriage is being altered. For some reason, couples are allegedly being compelled to enlist the user-friendly syllables of their last name to combine them with their significant others.

So let’s say your last name is Kleppin and your spouse is Tounis. The new name could be something like Klepto or Le Punis. In the case of a a real American couple, Ms. Polonsky and Mr. Pujura who morphed their new surname into — Polara — for the sake of the kids — one cannot blame these parents from protecting their children from suffering from an extreme identity crisis, Polish Indians?

One woman contended that she preferred the new take on names as a way of sharing and reflecting their equality in the relationship.

I can think of several ways to demonstrate equality in a relationship:

  • Take turns paying the mortgage
  • Shares all household chores 50-50
  • Alternate top and bottom responsibilities
  • The dichotomy in the coalescing of surnames is how couples cannot compromise on important matters such as; communication, home finances and how leisure time is spent. It’s kind of depressing to see relationships take another superficial nose dive.

Nevertheless, it is the main or NAME reason the single life is not so bad.

It only means the unattached should revere in their single-dom.
