Forget About Adopting If Your Single
April 13th, 2006 by Marsha JamesThe State Senate has passed a bill that would put single people at the end of the adoption line behind married couples. It means that it is now more difficult to adopt a child if you are not in a relationship or if you are not married.
The state that places the child with a single person would have to show that they were the most qualified AND that there were no available married couples to give the child to first. They would also have to go court and argue that they made the right choice in the interest of the child.
Some feel that this a direct slap in the face against gay couples. They have to sign up for adoption as single and this would indeed make it hard for them since they are not allowed to legally marry.
I do feel that this is ridiculous and I can’t even trust the “married couples” that they send the kids too anyway. You pick an adult who was adopted as a child and many can tell you horror stories of those adopted parents, as I’m sure there are those who were raised by wonderful people. The point is instead of ensuring that they only have good people wanting to adopt, they are picking who can adopt based on the status of them being married or not. Yeah I’m sure that will help the kids who are just looking for a good home.
