Best Cities for Singles, According to Forbes

August 24th, 2007 by Nancy

Forbes publishes a (rather arbitrary) list of the 10 “best cities for singles” every year, and this year the big winner is San Francisco. Not surprisingly, two other California cities made the list as well:

  1. San Francisco
  2. New York City
  3. Los Angeles
  4. Atlanta
  5. Chicago
  6. Washington D.C.
  7. San Diego
  8. Seattle
  9. Fort-Worth
  10. Philadelphia

I haven’t been to all of these places, so it’s hard for me to compare what I know to the list… but I am slightly surprised that Atlanta and Washington DC did so well. I imagine Atlanta was given a huge boost by the “cost of living” category, and D.C. was bolstered by the “culture” category. Those are just guesses, though.

I’m a little curious why Vegas didn’t make the list. Also, I do wish Seattle and Chicago had been ranked a bit higher. :)

So how does Forbes come up with these rankings? Well, they start with a list of 40 major U.S. cities. Then they rate these places in seven different categories (including nightlife and online dating), and the cities that do the best make the top 10 list.

There was a major switch in the way Forbes defined “city” this year, and this shook up the rankings a bit. For instance, some cities that were part of last year’s 40 (like Nashville and Raleigh Durham) weren’t technically considered “cities” this year, so they were replaced with places like Buffalo and Jacksonville.
