Dating: Who Pays the Tip?

December 24th, 2007 by Kathy

When in the early stage of dating, who pays for what can get awkward. Some people are traditionalists and some are more modern-minded.

Your date has invited you out to a fine meal and graciously paid for it. Who should pay the tip?

In my opinion, you should step out of your comfort zone and offer to pay the tip. If your date refuses, graciously let him pay. If he allows you to pay the tip, don’t hold resentment, thinking he should have paid. Don’t make the gesture of offering to pay the tip unless you are genuine about it. Your date has paid for the meal and allowing you to pay the tip may be his way of showing respect toward you wanting to do your part.

If your date pays for dinner and the tip, you can offer to pay next time. This shows your appreciation and your willingness to reciprocate respect and kindness.

Who pays should not turn into an argument. The way you handle small issues such as this can have an impact on how compatible you are should a relationship develop.
