Internet Dating: How Can You Tell Real From Fake?
April 28th, 2008 by KathyWhen browsing through profiles on internet dating sites, it may be difficult to tell who is real and who is fake. There isn’t a sure way of finding out, but it helps to know what red flags to look for.
* if you are male and a woman sends very bold and flirtatious comments, she may not be singling you out because of who you are, but because she’s trying to lure you over to her site - a site which may be porn or web cam related. Flattery is nice, but anyone that comes on too strong and too quickly, may have an agenda.
* if someone asks you to check out another website as soon as you start correspondence, be cautious. They may be leading you to a porn site, a site for you to sign up for something or something that is going to benefit them, not you. A person who truly wants to get to know you, does that first and then shares the websites they are affiliated with and not ones that would be objectionable.
* look carefully at grammar and punctuation. Sure, we aren’t all perfect writers, but when you see words that reek of a foreigner, it “could” be a spammer who specifically targets sites such as a dating site.
* tries hard to get personal information from you and early on. They may be targeting dating sites in order to use information collected for fraudulent use.
* if they seem too good to be true, there’s a possibility they are. Real people can be wonderful, but fakes can “appear” to be that way. Use caution and go slow in getting to know someone to see if they are real. A fake usually moves on if they aren’t getting what they want.
Not everyone will be fake if they meet the conditions above, but looking for red flags and proceeding with caution and common sense can alleviate problems.
