Guide for teenagers off to college
Most college students come from provinces thus personal finance becomes an issue to a good number of these teens. In some countries, parents shoulder all the expenses for college. But generally, not all parents can afford to take on the expenses and will need help from the teen himself to finance his studies. Here are some tips for teens that will embark on college life:
1. Check first if you will qualify for grants or scholarships. Loans should be a last resort to finance ones education. Scholarships are not of the same face. Some are based on academic achievements, some on financial capability.
2. Find out how to budget daily, weekly and monthly. Work around a plan as to how to save and to spend your money. As you go from month to month, you need to realize how to revise your budget plan as you discover your true expenses.
3. Work part time, if necessary. Most universities have programs for financially challenged students, making them student assistants for some departments like the library or the faculty. Working certain number of hours per month can help augment your monthly budget.
4. Do not buy brand new for the things you will need in school. You can borrow some of this stuff from friends and relatives. Others can be bought at reasonable costs from garage sales or from thrift stores. Or you can also buy items during back-to-school sales in department stores.
5. When using credit cards, have the discipline to use it intelligently. Always pay your balance on-time and in-full. Be sure to understand interest rates so that when you can not pay the bill on time or in full, you would know how much you will have to shoulder later.
6. If you can, cook your food and avoid eating out. Involve the rest of your room mates, so you can have certain days of the week as cook. Plan a menu for the week so that you can shop and cook accordingly. Buy a recipe book so you can have a variety of menus to work on week after week. Freeze leftovers that you can still re-heat sometime and enjoy as menu for that day. You will realize that eating out gobbles a large part of one’s budget. Families have recognized this fact early on. Eating out can easily double or triple your food budget if done more often than usual.
