It’s a love story and hurricane tale of various dating dilemmas and drama for assortment of relationships found in an interconnecting web of friends, acquaintances, and friends of friends who are all dating one another through proxy. Starts out with the story of Gigi and follows her dilemma of dating failures with men that are just “so not into her” since age 5. Her mom told her at age 5 that when men act like jerks, it means they like her.
The movie comically approaches men and women perspectives on determining male/female actions in the dating and/or relationship world in what they really mean, with the standards vs. the exceptions. Gigi struggles to find true love. She’s obsessed with the call-back game – you know, the one where people dating play with not calling each other back until the other makes the proper call, always oddly placed as the guy’s responsibility and why they thought its improper for the girl to call the guy. (Extremely silly in my opinion) Starting out with her latest date Conor (Kevin Connolly) who fails to call her because he’s into another girl (Anna) who’s not into him. So during a drive-by to a bar where he frequents, she befriends his best friend who gives her guidance of how to figure out the signs that men make on whether or not they are really into you or not. Anna who is so not into Connor other than a friend, meets a married man named Ben who she is totally into. But he’s married. Ben who is married to Janine (Jennifer Connelly), realizes he’s into Anna, but has the marital struggle of being dedicated to his marriage vows. Meanwhile Neil (Ben Affleck) gets dumped by
Beth because after 7 years he hasn’t proposed to her. After Ben cheats with Anna and tells his wife, it doesn’t really bother her that he slept with someone else, but rather the fact she thinks he’s hiding cigarette smoking from her. Just as Gigi thinks she figures out men, she’s thrown back into confusion which winds up leading her back to her goal of finding her soulmate or “exception”. It’s a whirlwind of drama and misunderstandings as well as complexities that makes this movie hit you to your heart in the “oh I’ve been there” moments blended into a comedy drama of humorous proportions. I really enjoyed this flick, it even had a moment or two that made me cry. A must see. Rating 5 stars out of 5.
