Online dating has become something of a phenomenon in the last couple of years. It is no longer unusual to hear stories of people meeting or being involved with a person they met online. In fact, I met my current sweetheart online, and I know of three different couples who actually got married to someone they met on the internet.

But I think for every successful online relationship, there’s probably five stories that end in disaster. It’s all too easy to enter into a relationship online with someone who hides their agenda, or fails to practice honesty. That’s probably why the paid dating sites tend to be more successful. If a person is paying to find a compatible match, then you know they’re truly interested in seeking out a relationship. That doesn’t mean there are no wackos or sex-fiends on the paid dating sites, but it certainly filters out a lot of people who could more easily forge a deception from a non-pay location.
I am not completely sold on their compatibility system, but e-harmony seems to be the leader in online dating. They are a high visibility sight, with commercials on the television and radio. E-harmony’s main pitch is their compatibility quiz which matches people on “29 dimensions of compatibility”. All that is required for success are two compatible, paying members who were actually honest with themselves when they took the screening quiz. The good news: Since e-harmony is a widely popular dating site, there’s more people on it. When you have several million members looking for love, chances are better that there might be someone out there for you. Numbers, even more than the compatibility screening, is the big draw of e-harmony.
