It amazes me the number of people who don't think ahead about the issues that would negatively impact a relationship. For example, I have a friend who started seeing a woman who lives about an hour and a half away from him. He was perfectly willing to drive the distance. She was perfectly willing to see him....until. This woman decided after a few months of dating that the relationship would never go any where because of the distance. The distance was there before the relationship started. My friend was willing to deal with the distance. My friend is emotionally involved and this woman is willing to let the relationship go because of the distance. Why didn't she think of that before getting involved to start with? Or is she using this as an excuse not to continue the relationship because she has an underlying reason? It could be either. It's important to think ahead about what you want in a partner and in a relationship. I recently decided that I had been single for long enough and I would join the thousands of other people who used online dating services. I was lucky enough to decide to use this service on a day that was free, meaning I could correspond with other members for the whole weekend without having to pay. I jumped on this and signed up and started messaging all the people who were selected as being compatible matches for me. There was one guy who I seemed to hit it off with right away. We exchanged about 5 messages that evening, learning everything about each other. He was a teacher who loved books, God, sports, dogs, similar music. Do you have a friend who complains that men are idiots, yet dumbs herself down to seem more attractive? We all do. And she is probably the one having more meaningless hookups and getting more action than you are. Why do women feel that to appear more attractive to men they must seem less intelligent than they actually are? For hundreds of years, a woman’s opinion was not approved of and definitely not asked for. Now, stereotypes and gender roles have supposedly changed, but have they in actuality? Some relationships become toxic over time and little by little to where the signs aren't so obvious until a lot of little things have accumulated. Some relationships are toxic from the start and have very obvious signs. When a relationship becomes toxic you have two choices. You can work together to heal the relationship or you may have to make the choice to end the toxic relationship. Some relationships may only need some small adjustments to make it better, such as more effective communication. Other relationships may be severely toxic to where it's in your best interest to get out and fast. If you are in a toxic relationship you need to ask yourself where the problems lie. Is your partner abusive? Do the two of you not communicate well? Are both of you willing to work on your relationship and commit to making it better? If your partner is obviously abusive and not willing to seek help, you should question why you are staying with someone who brings so much destruction into your life.
